About David Mitchell & Rupert Kirby…

Rupert Kirby and David Mitchell seamlessly match and weave the traditional with their own original compositions together to create tune sets which are great to listen as well as dance to. They are multi-instrumentalists but primarily use the classic combination of fiddle and guitar for concerts and ceilidhs to create a great atmosphere for public and private events.

Rupert Kirby is an experienced folk musician, having been part of the North Devon and wider folk scene singing, playing and recording with folk groups ‘Hearts of Oak’ and ‘Shake a Leg’ at maritime festivals such as Falmouth, Barrow-in-Furness and the Mumbles.

Rupert has extensive experience in music education, teaching in primary, middle and secondary levels and working with school choirs and instrumentalists. For more than a decade he led the Exmoor Carolers, a group of keen folk singers who revived the traditional community carols of Exmoor and beyond, performing to delighted audiences across the West Country.

He plays fiddle music from a wide variety of genres, including UK and Irish folk fiddle, jazz and classical styles and enjoys playing in concerts and ceilidhs alike! He is a prolific writer of contemporary folk fiddle tunes, notably a collection called ‘The Lorry Driver’s Lunch’. Recently he has started up a regular Taunton Sunday afternoon folk tune session with enthusiastic players playing both his own and more traditional repertoire.

David Mitchell describes his guitar playing as “Folk-Classical fingerstyle”, combining these genres to create a beautiful and unique take on some well known pieces and traditional folk tunes as well as performing his own original compositions.

Alongside performing solo, David performs in a duo with Rupert Kirby for concerts and ceilidhs as well as in the “Monkey See Monkey Do Ceilidh Band”. He is one half of the established West Country folk duo “Mitchell and Vincent” who performed around the country.

He also enjoys depping with other bands and musicians near and far.

In addition to being a talented musician, David trained as a luthier at Newark and Sherwood College and uses a Classical Guitar that he crafted himself. He also plays other stringed instruments as well as whistles and recorders.

David has enjoyed performing solo guitar at a range of lovely venues including Downend Folk & Roots, Banbury Folk Club, The Amadeus, Wessex Acoustic Folk Club, Fivehead Folk & Acoustic Music Night, VegFest Bristol as well as many other public and private events.

David’s debut solo album, Contours, released on the 18th of October 2024 has been described as “tremendous” by Alan Ritson of Fine Folk (LCR FM) and “excellent” by Robert Ford of The Folk & Roots Show (Abbey FM).
